Little Mommy

Sydney is such a little mommy. She is really into her dolls lately. She takes them for a stroll in her doll stroller, changes a poopy diaper once a day, and also feeds the baby milk and juice. Today she even read her doll a book. Between her love for kitchens, cooking, cleaning and dolls, I think she may just be the perfect little Suzy Homemaker when she gets older...or a Home Ec teacher. haha.

We've gone organic!

And I am trading my SUV in for a Prius.
Kidding.
So lately I have been thinking more about choosing organic produce. It's healthier for our family and organic produce tastes better, we can definitely notice a difference.

I was reading an article about organic produce delivery and I thought, "What a great idea." We already have our milk delivered and we love it. We never run out of milk and the milk tastes better than store milk. And it's hormone free, perfect for Sydney.
We certainly do not eat enough veggies at our house and I really want to start feeding my family healthier food. What better way to try new veggies, and since I will not allow the veggies to go bad and I HATE throwing produce away, then I will cook with them and I will love it. ;)

I will say we eat quite a bit of fruit at our house, but I am always up for trying new fruit. I remembered hearing my high school friend Brandi's husband had started an organic produce delivery service in our area called Edens Organics and I checked it out. I liked the foods on the weekly list, although I did substitute some onions for more potatoes. The cost is $35 per delivery, but after pricing the food at the grocery store, it's about the same price as going to my fave store for produce, Central Market. Actually it'd be more expensive at Central Market because then I would realize we'd need Cheerios, crackers, cheese, etc and well, they are about as pricey as Whole Foods. (I prefer to buy the staples at Albertsons.)

Anyway, we had our first delivery last week and it's great! The fruit tastes terrific. The oranges were gone the next day, and the apples and mangoes are awesome. The veggies are great also, although we haven't made it through all of them yet. I will say the strawberries weren't the greatest, I realize it's not strawberry season yet so hopefully they will be better next time. All in all we are very pleased with this service and we will get our produce delivery every other week.

Here's a sample list of the items delivered each week taken from their website:

Bananas
Strawberries
Pineapple
Grapes
Donut Peaches
Red Plums
Green leaf lettuce
Corn
Celery
Zucchini
Cauliflower
Green Beans

Oh yes-one more thing I like. They buy most of their produce from local growers, and they include recipes for the ingredients. We had a terrific salad recipe that included the lettuce, strawberries and mangos. Yummy.

Sydney's doing great!

Sydney's fever went away Sunday night late afternoon/early evening and she's been feeling great ever since. We were even able to go to school today, yippee! Hopefully this is the end of the sickness for a while. Now I am germphobe mom and carrying around hand sanitizers and wipes and wiping her down, along with the public surfaces, every few minutes. She sooo loves it.

Same ol same ol

Sydney's still hanging in there. She still has a temperature, most times anyway. She'll be fine for a few hours then her temp goes up to 103 or so. So frustrating! I think I'll call the doctor tomorrow and find out what else we can do. We've been rotating between the Motrin and Tylenol every three hours, but at this point I am getting worried that she shouldn't be on this medicine for as long as she has. The new quarter of her toddler class starts this week too, and I was really hoping she'd be able to go on Tuesday. That's not looking so good at this point. We'll see what the doc says. I swear we are keeping the clinic in business.

I remember being pregnant with Sydney, and I was a total nervous Nellie. I rented a doppler for most the pregnancy and checked for her heartbeat several times a day. Anytime I had any sort of pain I worried. I remember thinking, "I can't wait to have this baby, then I can stop worrying." And then it dawned on me...this was just the beginning...the beginning of a lifetime of worrying about your child. From childhood illnesses, to the new drivers license to peer pressure at school. It doesn't ever end. And it probably doesn't help I am a total worry wart anyway. Oi, this too shall pass.

And with that I am going to bed, I am exhausted.

Horton Hears a Sydney

I took Sydney to see her first movie at the theater this past week. We met up with our friends Nikki and Cameron for lunch beforehand, and then went to the theater to see, "Horton Hears a Who."

Sydney did pretty well considering. She made it through the previews and probably watched about 40 minutes of the movie altogether. She spent the rest of the time walking up and down the stairs, riding the escalator out front, sliding down from her booster seat to the ground and then up again, and jumping up and down while holding on to the seat in front of us. (Sorry about that couple in front of us.) All in all a success!

We'll probably wait a bit until we see another movie. I guess if this would have been a Dora movie then she might have paid more attention, but Sydney's not really that into Dr. Seuss and well, she's 2 1/2.
Plus, we paid $14.50 for our tickets-for a matinee. Holy moly. Probably not worth it when you consider you can buy the movie on dvd for the same price in a couple of months.
I was telling Nikki that I remember going to movies with my friends in junior high and it was $3 for a matinee! We did the movies and mall often. Then I started thinking...exactly how long ago was that anyway? I started calculating in my head....1988ish, wow...uhh, that's 20 years ago. Not only am I getting old but I am already pulling the, "When I was your age, milk was a penny and we walked to school in the snow uphill both ways with no shoes on."

Oh yes, and the movie was great, well the 40 minutes I saw of it anyway-broken up into 5-10 minute increments.

Anyhoo-here are a couple pics of the kiddos
I don't know exactly why they are ducking....

Sydney update

Everyone is sleep-deprived at our house today. We didn't sleep a lot last night and the nap was short today.

I woke up at 4am and could feel that Sydney was very warm. I took her temperature and it was 102.5. I woke Anthony up and he gave her a lukewarm bath. Then at 5am she was wide awake so Syd and I went downstairs and watched some tv, ate cheese and crackers, two popsicles and juice. This brought her temperature down quite a bit, and at 6:30am she was at 99.5. We went back to sleep and a few hours later she felt warm again and she was back up to 102. This whole time we were alternating between Tylenol and Motrin every three hours.

I called the doctor's office early in the afternoon to see if we should bring her in. The nurse thought it was a good idea to bring her in since her fever was higher today than yesterday at the ER. We made an appointment for late afternoon. At the doctor's office the nurse said her temp was 97.3. We were kind of surprised it was so low because she felt cooler, but not that low. (I swear those ear thermometers are not that accurate, I should have asked the doctor to check the temp himself.) Anyway the doctor didn't tell us anything we didn't already know but we were glad we took her anyway. We had dinner and took Sydney to Cold Stone for a special treat. When we arrived back home she was starting to feel warm again, although it's only the top half of her body, the bottom half is pretty cold. I took her temp and she is 101.5. She's cuddled up with daddy right now and she's looking pretty sleepy so I think it's just about night night time. So that's about it here. It's frustrating to have her temp rise and fall so often. Especially because with febrile seizures it's due to a rapid rise in temperature, not the temperature itself.

That's about it for now.

Back to the ER

Sydney had another febrile seizure this afternoon. Completely unexpected again. We had a fun day that culminated by going to the park. She was acting normal and didn't feel warm, in fact she hasn't had a temperature since Monday. She took a nap and I heard her wake up on the baby monitor. When I walked into her room she was in a full seizure in her crib. Anthony worked from home today so I yelled down to him. He came upstairs and called 911. I placed Sydney on her side and took off her clothes.

We took the ambulance to the hospital where we spent about 4 hours. The doctor decided to do a blood test, and so far the blood counts are all normal. We are just waiting for one more test result tomorrow. They also hooked her up to an IV to give her fluids, and gave her an antibiotic in case her viral infection is also a bacterial infection. (the blood test will tell us that.) They were a bit more thorough since this was her second seizure in five days.

It appears everything is normal, once you have one seizure you have a 50% chance of having another. It appears her viral infection she had earlier this week just hadn't gone away like we thought. Last week Cole had a fever that went away and came back again too, so it looks like they had the same thing.

So yeah, that's where we're at now. Because it's a fever induced seizure it still doesn't affect her neurologically, and there's no reason to believe there is anything seriously wrong. This is just what happens with these types of seizures.

Right now at 11:30pm she is doing great. She just finished eating chicken and french fries, and is playing with daddy.

Sugar daddy

Tonight as we were putting Sydney to sleep, I asked her where she wanted to go for her next daddy-daughter day. She's been asking Anthony for another daddy daughter day the past couple of days. She told me the Outdoor show (they went a couple weeks ago) and Starbucks. Can we be a little bit more northwest than that? haha.
Then as we said goodnight she looked to Anthony, gave him a kiss and said, "Goodnight Sugar daddy." We laughed so hard. Today I asked Anthony for some cashola since I was out of cash and called him sugar daddy. Apparently she was listening because that is what she called him tonight, several times. Silly kid.

The park with the posse and the doc visit

Today we met up with our friends at the park. The weather was great! I think it was about 50 but it was sunny and after all the rain and snow we've had lately, it was terrific. Sydney was so excited to see her buds-she ran up to Samantha when she saw her and gave her a big hug. Later she did the same to Cole. What a sweetie. She just loves her friends. The kids played and we ate lunch at the park.

We had a doctor appointment this afternoon and the doctor's office is about two blocks away from the park, how convenient. Sydney was so excited to see her doctor. She's been talking about her for a while now. When the doctor walked into the room, Sydney gave her a hug and kiss. At her two year appointment Sydney cried nearly the whole time so this was a welcome surprise. The doctor informed us she doesn't have a UTI, and did feel that her lymph nodes were a bit swollen, so most likely Sydney had a viral infection which caused the fever.

When we pulled into our garage this afternoon, three neighbor girls ran up and asked if Sydney was home. They had seen the ambulances and Sydney carried off by a paramedic so they were very concerned. I took Sydney out of the car and the girls all gave her a hug. Sydney really hasn't ever played with them because they are a bit older, 5, 6 and 7. Two of the girls held Sydney's hand and walked around with her, then they pushed her in their wagon and Sydney had a blast. She adores her new friends, Kaley, Anna and Janie. I chatted with the neighbor mom for awhile too which was nice. Her son is three months younger than Sydney so they'll be going off to school together in just a few years! We always chat with them when we're outside, but now that the kids are older hopefully they'll be playing together outside more often. We have such great neighbors, we have decided we can never move because we like our neighbors so much. Either that or we all have to move to the same neighborhood. When the paramedics arrived the other day, several neighbors came down to see what they could do to help. I really appreciated that.

Me and My Blog

My friend Emily posted this on her blog and I thought it looked like fun.

Why did you start a blog?

Originally I had a couple of photo sites, but my biggest problem is that I wanted to say more than I was allowed per picture. We have family all over the country so it was a great way for them to keep up with us. My friend April told me about her blog and suggested I start one. I checked hers out, I was impressed, and here I am. I'm a blog addict now. Thanks April. ;)

How did you come up with your blog name?

Well, I didn't want to put too much information "out there" in case some serial child kidnapper read my blog and decided to make a visit so I chose not to include our name. Plus I think it's cool to have a last name that starts with an O, like Jackie O. And the blog is about what is going on in our lives and house...so there you have it. Exciting stuff, no?

Do your friends and family know about your blog?

I think most people do. Sometimes I am hesitant to tell people about it because I think people must think I have waaayyyy too much time on my hands since I post frequently. (Which I do.) And that maybe it comes across that I am a little bit too crazy about my kid because I take so many flippin pictures. (Which I am.) But it's fun. Plus I don't have to actually "talk" to my friends anymore, they know what's going on in our lives because they keep updated on the blog. Kidding about that. No, it is funny though when a friend will mention something that I wrote about in my blog, and I ask, "Oh, did I tell you about that?" No, they read it on here. hehe.

How do you write your posts?

I am the same as Emily, and actually probably most bloggers. I think about what I am going to write about when something happens, or actually take pictures to specifically blog about it. I have it visualized in my head, what I am going to write, then I just write it and realize later-that post could have been a bit more thought out-it sounded better in my head. Oh well, I do have some time on my hands but not enough time to write, edit and re-write my posts. Especially since I post many of the posts late at night and my brain hurts. Like now.

Have you ever had a troll or had to delete unkind comments?

Nope, but maybe because I don't have my blog listed on blogger.com or on google. I prefer not to put my blog out there and to keep it amongst my family and friends, and probably their friends.

Do you check your stats? Do you care how many people read your blog? If you do care, how do you increase traffic?

I actually have a really cool tracker, thanks to April, and it tells me, among other things, the city of the person reading my blog. Although I don't think it's 100% accurate because I know people who read the blog and their city isn't listed. And not even close either. (I think if you live within 50 miles of Everett it just says Everett.) Sometimes I have 10 readers a day and sometimes 50. I had someone in Malaysia read my blog once, but I figured they must have gotten here by mistake. And no I don't care to increase traffic. Traffic's already congested enough in Seattle, thank you very much. Oh, you mean internet traffic?

What kind of blogs/posts interest you?

I love reading blogs. My faves are mainly mommy blogs, I get a lot of great ideas from other moms, and it's nice to read about other moms going through the same thing you are. I also keep up with the happenings of celebs from a blog or two. How else am I going to know what is really going on with the show, "The Hills?" I also read a couple fitness ones, just in case I ever get interested in fitness.

What do you like and dislike about blogging?

I love it. I love that my in-laws in California can keep up with Sydney and what we are doing up here. I enjoy rambling on, and it's a fun way to do that. (I was once told I had a "chatty" writing style from a college professor.) He'd be so proud now. It also gives my friends who work something to do to pass the time. I enjoyed keeping up with my blogs back in my working days. Err, I mean my lunch break Kate, I only did that on my lunch break, yeah. Oh heck, who am I kidding? You probably knew. In fact you were probably reading blogs of your own. ;)
I also LOVE that this blog can be made into a book, and a nice one at that. Check out Blurb, it's so cool and I think I am slowly giving up scrapbooking. Yeah, I'll still do a book here and there, but I really like that I can make this into a beautiful hardcover book that Sydney will love to look at one day. I know I would have loved to read something like this from my parents back in the day. How cool to see the everyday life of my parents and activities my mom did with my brother and I!
What I dislike is that more of my friends don't blog. Especially when one say...maybe is pregnant and it'd be a great way to keep her parents, who live in Arizona, updated on how the pregnancy is going? And maybe another one has two kids now and I think she probably just tells her family and friends to read my blog to keep updated on the family happenings since she never does anything with her pictures. Okay kidding girls, but I do really think you should give in to peer pressure and start blogging. And nice work to my friends who have started. I love your blogs. :)
